Morning Routine Habits

Implementing a morning routine has an array of benefits, especially for your mental health. A morning routine not only starts your day in the right way, it also gives you time for yourself and enables you to set intentions for the day ahead thus putting yourself in the best frame of mind possible. It’s well known that having a morning routine sets you up for a productive day and here I share ways for you to start your day with peace and a positive attitude.


Here is a short snippet of some healthy morning routine habits I work through with my clients and ensure they hold themselves accountable for. Start your day the right way and you will reap the benefits sooner rather than later!


Creating healthy habits for yourself

Setting your alarm for a mere 20 minutes earlier than usual allows yourself to get an extra 20 minutes of you time and to start your morning routine rituals! Trust me, once you make these 20 minutes a habit, I promise you won’t regret that earlier wake-up call!


Cold Water Wash

Immediately upon getting out of bed, splash your face with cold water. Not only will this wake you up, but it also reduces facial puffiness. Cold water also tightens and reduces the appearance of pores so it really is a win:win!


Body Brush

Getting your lymphatic system moving in a morning is essential for your body to flush out excess toxins which have built up whilst we sleep. Dry body brushing gets your lymphatic system moving, gets your blood circulating and has been suggested to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Make this a part of your morning routine and you are already setting yourself up for a great day by moving toxins around and getting them on their way out of your system.


Once you have body brushed, take a shower to assist with the blood circulation and to wake your body up even more; a cold shower is the best way to wake up but I get that it’s not always everyone’s preference especially first thing so do what makes ​you ​feel best.

Lemon Water

I’ve said this many times before, but drinking a large glass of fresh lemon water is a great way to start your day. Lemon water is not only hydrating which is a great after a long sleep when our body tends to wake up dehydrated, but lemon water also assists with firing up our digestive system as well as our metabolism.


Starting your day with this almost instantly sets yourself up for success; you made the effort to get up 20 minutes early and started the day with drinking lemon water so chances of you wanting to ruin this ritual by grabbing a doughnut or croissant on the way to work= slim to none!! Why would you make this effort go to waste?


Morning Journal

As part of your morning routine, take 5 minutes to sit down and enjoy your coffee or tea whilst you journal. Journal about how you feel, what’s on your mind and what’s going on that day. Any goals you have or what you want to achieve. Starting a morning journal ritual is so powerful at clearing your mind, improving your mental health and making you feel less anxious.


Having everything out of your head and down on paper takes the edge away from a potentially stressful day ahead and allows you to start the day with a clear mind and no excess baggage you may be carrying. Your journal doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but yourself and could be a jumble of words, but start and make it part of your routine and I assure you that you will reap the benefits of it after consistent practice.

Make your bed

This one may sound really simple but the amount of my friends/clients who leave the house without making the bed is astounding! Research has shown that making your bed enables you to feel more organised, makes you feel less stressed once you return to bed in the evening as your room isn’t a mess and it leads to other good habits. Maybe you already do this automatically which is great, but if not try to make it a part of your morning routine and after consistent practice, you may notice how much clearer your mind is once you leave the house.
